Aye corona! Experiences of an HIV nurse in a time of COVID-19

COVID-19 swept into 2020 like a hurricane, a few odd cases in Wuhan, China. Then news came of cases in Italy where people had been to China, the Italian epidemic had spread and what started as hundreds of deaths changed to thousands, and we were warned that it was coming our way.

NEED: care delivery in the HIV field

As healthcare professionals we often have to deal with more or less challenging situations and manage them to the best of our abilities. Our training provides us with certain tools but occasionally life exceeds theory, and expectations. This article will illustrate how sympathy, empathy and compassion can be, and usually are, employed in combination in order to successfully treat patients and engage them in care.

Proving the worth of HIV nurses

Rarely have nurses had to justify and quantify their role. However, since the recession in 2008 and far-reaching cuts across health care, nursing roles have been put under scrutiny. Nurses now have to work to outcomes and targets for the first time, and the value of the nurse, their role and worth to health care is being questioned. Once seen as a safe role within care many nurses now feel pressurised to justify and expand their role to add value. But what does this mean? How can nurses prove their worth and add value, and what tools are available to facilitate this change?
