Abstract

Globally, the elderly population is increasing due to the high incidence of hypertension. Hypertension is a health disorder characterized by a systolic of more than 140 mmHg and a diastolic of more than 90 mmHg.One way to prevent or reduce the impact of hypertension on the elderly is employing self-care nursing self-care developed by Dorothea E. Orem in 1959 is one of the conceptual models that support the development of nursing science and practice and is a model that is widely used in nursing. The main focus of this conceptual model is the ability of a person to care for himself independently so that the ability to maintain his health is achieved. This study aims to determine the correlation between knowledge about hypertension and self-care according to the theory of Dorothea E. Orem in the elderly with hypertension in the work area of the Takokak Public Health Center, Sukabumi Regency. Hypertension or better known as high blood pressure is a condition where a person's blood pressure is above the normal or optimal limit, namely 120 mmHg for systolic and 80 mmHg for diastolic. This type of quantitative research uses Cross Sectional approach. The sampling technique uses Proportional Sampling. The population is 305 people and the sample is 173 people. The data collection method uses a questionnaire. Test the validity of knowledge on all items valid p-value test data analysis Chi-Square. The results of the study were mostly good knowledge. Meanwhile, for hypertension diet adherence, most were obedient, p-value = 0.011, which means there is a relationship. The conclusion of this study states there is a relationship between knowledge and self-care according to Dorothea E. Orem's theory in the elderly with hypertension in the work area of the Takokak Public Health Center, Sukabumi Regency. The suggestion of this research is Takokak Public Health Center can develop knowledge for the elderly to fulfill the application of self-care with blood pressure in the elderly who have hypertension; this is from the indicator of self-integrity which has a very large influence on the self-care variable of the elderly with hypertension.
